Newbury, MA, October 25, 2007. Local resident Dudley Glover will be honored on November 2 by the mayor of Cohoes, New York for his recent walk across upstate New York on the Erie Canal. A proclamation of achievement will be read by the mayor of this historic city located at the place where the Erie Canal joins the Hudson River The decree cites Glover’s personal effort to encourage others to walk for their health, especially for diabetes.
Glover, an insulin-dependent diabetic, will soon complete the last segment of his 360-mile walk on the tow paths of the Erie Canal. He started in Buffalo on October 1 and will arrive in Cohoes by the end of the month. Associated with this event he will serve on a panel at the Diabetes Community Forum, at an educational event sponsored by the Albany branch of the American Diabetes Association. On November 14th Glover will participate in the Education Rally of the International Diabetes Foundation in NYC for the first UN World Diabetes Day. With this kick-off event to a year-long campaign, the IDF is alerting the public to this serious health issue and encouraging the UN to recognize the growing problems of a world-wide epidemic. Mr. Glover and other participates will be holding blue umbrellas which will form a giant human blue circle. Also, the Empire State building will be lit up in blue for diabetes that day. People around the world are meeting the challenge to illuminate in blue other buildings and monuments as well. Glover has recorded his journey for an audio/visual presentation and will be available to groups or organizations to speak on the growing diabetes concern and his personal experiences of enjoying traveling even while dealing with these health issues.
