Religious Freedom
The Burned Over District
The Burned Over District.
The canal brought many changes as the frontier moved westward. This included a large influx of settlers looking for chance to start over or freedom from religious persecution. Known as the Great Awakening, this period of religious revivalism witnessed saw the rise of a lot of new evangelical sects such as the Seven Day Adventists. The religious fervor of this time earned the area the nick name of the Burned Over District.
Palmyra might be considered the capital of the Burned Over District since it was here that John Smith founded the church of the Latter Day Saints, more commonly know as the Mormons. Just a few miles south of Palmyra is located Hill Cumorah where Smith received his inspiration. The place today is houses a center that is very important to the churches followers.
In the town if the Mormon Book store, where the Book of Mormon has been translated into hundreds of different languages. Upstairs above the store, these various editions are printed, bound, and packaged for shipment around the world.
